Started in 1975 by Bob & Nancy Conklin, parents of the current owners, Kelly and his wife Robin, Island Creamery continues to serve delicious frozen treats to locals and visitors alike. The original part of the building was once a pool hall and located across from the Fire House downtown on Chincoteague Island.
The Conklins moved the building to the current Maddox Blvd. location in the Spring of 1975 and opened a candy store known as Mr. Chocolate. Ice Cream was added to the menu the following year. Island Creamery has been renovated and added onto through the years and now is instantly recognizable by the lighthouse portion of the building. We now offer indoor and outdoor deck seating. Cole Conklin, Drew Conklin, Jen (his fiancée) and Courtney Conklin are the third generation of family members dedicated to keeping the quality and spirit of Island Creamery alive.
All of our ice cream is homemade in small batches. We start with fresh cream and milk from local cows, add locally grown fruits or goodies from our kitchen and spin them in our American made Emery Thompson batch freezer. The end result is the freshest and hopefully most delicious ice cream you’ll find anywhere. We’d like to introduce some of our most popular ice cream flavors. Bourbon Caramel Crunch is bourbon ice cream with caramel swirls and Heath Bar toffee pieces. Pony Tracks is a vanilla ice cream with homemade hot fudge, peanut butter cups and peanut butter. Marsh Mud is our super rich double chocolate ice cream. Java Jolt is a strong coffee ice cream with homemade brownie chunks and chocolate covered coffee beans.
Kids love our Cotton Candy Party flavor and our Birthday Cake flavor made from cake batter ice cream with homemade buttercream swirl and rainbow sprinkles. We also offer vegan and sugar free flavors at all of our locations.
We also make delicious homemade sorbets throughout the year. Some of our seasonal flavors include Strawberry Sorbet in the spring, Orange Juice Sorbet in the summer and Apple Cider Sorbet in the fall.
Here is a list of the year-round and seasonal flavors we serve at all three locations. To view our current offerings, please visit the "Menu" tab at the top of the page!

If you tell one of our servers you have a peanut allergy, they can scoop your ice cream from an unopened container to avoid cross contamination. However, if you suffer from an extreme peanut allergy, it may be in your best interest to abstain as peanuts are used in the facility.

For Chincoteague Island location: We are open year round from 11 AM -9 PM and until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday. From Memorial Day to mid- September we are open until 10 PM daily (on busy nights…). We close at 5 PM on Christmas Eve and are closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
For our Berlin and Salisbury locations we are open 11 AM -9 PM daily. However, in Berlin we may close for a few weeks in January - February. We will keep you posted. We promise.
If you are interested in taking some of our pints and quarts home with you, please contact us at least 24 hours before you leave the Island. We will store them in our flash freezer overnight at -30F. You will need your own cooler to store the ice cream in for your journey. Packing material (towels or newspaper) to fill in the empty space in your cooler will help keep the temperature down for longer. We also have Ice Brix available for sale. With proper preparation, we have had customers report successful travel times of up to 6-7 hours. However, we cannot offer any guarantees as there are too many variables that are out of our control. Also, this option is only available at our Chincoteague location as we do not have flash freezers in our Maryland stores.
